Orkut VS Fcaebook

In 2009, we saw a tough competition between Orkut &  Facebook. In 2009 Facebook and Twitter get successed in making a huge fan club.In India it was the year of the face book, Facebook become the major social networking site in India.

For those who still unaware of Alexa Ranking in India, Facebook overtook Orkut to secure its position at Number 4 leaving behind Orkut at Number 5. This article looks at the fight from an Indian perspective and finds out the sustainable growth of Facebook in India. Orkut is fighting the battle hard to leave no stone unturned, but are still not able to come with the right kind of innovation needed.

Before we begin the analysis; its time to get some facts straight. It’s a common myth that Facebook was launched much later than Orkut. However, the launch date of Orkut was Jan 2004  and named after Orkut Buyukkokten, the Turkish Google employee. While that of Facebook was Feb 2004 (hardly one month difference).

Fcaebook, was intially a website reserved for student of Harvard University.. So the concept of Facebook gaining popularity in a matter of just one year is not so correct. Yes, the presence was felt much later in India and it gained popularity in a short time but the global launch dates were close. Facebook has over 230 million active users and has been rapidly growing around the world in the last 24 months.Orkut, the social network run by Google, has remained dominant in Brazil and India.

               But Orkut is the first social networking site of the india, before this most of the people don't know about the web 2.0.For them Orkut was the platform of sharning information ,sharing albums.Still its much popular among students but it fails in connecting its user globally. In 2008 Orkut was the no. 1 social networking site in the india, but this year Orkut get failed to make its popularity.

Personally, In starting i don't like Facebook but now i access Facebook more than Orkut. I personally think on Facebook, you choose to share what you want to and with whom. Facebook is great for discovering interesting friends of friends, If you and I share a common friend, we are also likely to share at least some common interests, i think Orkut is lacking in innovation. Lets see what will happen in 2010.......
