Deeper Look into Google Inside Search

Google is doing more than 200 experiments with Google search and every year Google implement over 500 improvements to its search algorithm. As Amith Singhal said, Last year Google launched the 500 changes in algorithm, means Google changes his algorithm everyday. In 2010 Google run over 20,000 experiments in Google search. Few days ago Google posted the ten recent algorithm changes in search results in his blog post.

"If our scientific testing say this is good idea to Google users we will launch it on Google." Amit Singhal

But how Google implement these changes and how Google decide which new algorithm they need to implements in search results. Well, Google do lots of live search experiment and send the some data of those experiment to actual Google search traffic and Google do this by using the sand boxes. For an improvement in search algorithm, it has to go through process of rigorous scientific testing. And if Google experiments data showed it's not helping user, Google will not launch change in algorithm.

"When you align the Google intrest with user interest like Google aligned Good things happen." Amit Singhal

Below is short video, in which Google search scientists inlcuding Amit Singhal, Rajan Patel, Scott Huffman etc. talk about how Google implement the new search algorithm.

Google Analytics: How to See Actual Keywords Search Query Using Advanced Filter

Advanced filters are very helpful in exctracting data from the avaiable fields by using the Regular Expression. Advance filter takes up two fields which are Field A and Field B, to construct the output field. In order to use the advanced filter you should have knowledge of Regular expression. If you don't know you can read the Lunametics Regular Expression guide to get an idea about Regex.

In Google Analytics we see the keywords data as total, paid and non paid which is total, cpc and non cpc traffic. If someone arrive to your website through cpc or PPC(pay per click), Google Analytics show the keywords which are matched in your Ad Group in not the actual search query visitor typed in search engine.

For example, if someone search for 'cheap school shoes' and you are using 'school shoes' as broad match in your ad group, then GA will show 'school shoes' as keyword in GA not 'cheap school shoe'.

In order to create advanced filter, first you need to create a duplicate profile in Google Analytics and for this
  • Go to the Account Home
  • Select the website for which you want to create filter
  • Click on the setting tab (small wheel tab on top of right hand side), if you are using the new version of GA.
  • Click on new profile on top of right hand side, which will look like this:

Give a name to your profile and then click on create profile. Now click on Filters tab then click on New Filter and then select the create new filter for profile and after this choose the custom filter and fill the fields as shown in image. You can give Filter name as per your convenience.

In field A-> ExtractA  select Referral and use this regular expression (/?|&) (q|P|search|kw)=([^&]*). After this create other filter which will look like this

Now save changes, that's it, you created filter for actual keywords search. Make sure your filter are in order i.e. filter 1 should be above the filter 2, otherwise it will not work properly. You can check this by clicking on the Filters tab.

Five Mistakes which Kill Landing Page Conversion Rate

Landing page is page where you want visitors will do your desired action. This can be contact us form filling, news letter subscription or product purchase. Visitors who are looking for product or services related to your business can reach to your landing page through different sources which can be SEO, SEM, SMM etc. We can also say landing pages get the maximum traffic in your website and these pages must have good conversion rate.

In my past post i write about landing page best practices, and how to optimize it in best way. But still we made few commom but serious mistakes which kill the conversion rate of landing page. Some of the most commom mistakes are:

Ignoring Headline Line
Headline is soul of landing page, in 3-5 seconds visitor decide whether he should stay on page or leave. One of the most catching thing in landing page is headline. A well written headline can decrease the bounce rate of landing page and increase the conversion rate. It would be better if you test 2-3 different headlines and check will work better.

Using Same Website Design
You will advertise only those things which you sell or give services and all these pages are already in your website. So you make little bit changes in that page and start promoting it as landing page, which is not at all good.

A usual website page have less room for experiment and testing, where as a landing page is totally different here we can make test and experiments. It would be better if we use separate page as landing page.

To Long Form Fields & Captcha
An ideal contact us form should have only Name, E mail id, Cell no. and Comment or message fields. Don't ask for unnecessarily information like Last Name, Zip no., Gender, City etc.

Lots of landing page use captcha for avoiding the spam, but studied had been found that using of captcha in landing page decrease the conversion rate. Combination of letters, misreading of letters can take away a potentail lead.

It would be enough if your contact us form field have proper validation, an upcaptcha form can give you few spam leads but it will never lower down your page conversion rate

Asking for too many things
Too many choices are bad, more choices you will decrease the conversion rate of landing page and vice versa. Ask for only one specific thing and action in landing page.

Missing Above the Fold
Studied showed that web users spend 80% of their time above the fold. All the important content of page should come above the fold, as user click on your ads or landing on your page, every useful information should be visible with our scrolling the page.
