Meta tags are the HTML tags which provide the additional information about web page. For SEO purpose the important Meta tags are Title, Description, Header, Alt and Keywords. The Meta tags are important for search engine optimization for the following reasons:

. Meta tags provide the necessary information that is listed in search engine results page (SERPs)
. Meta tags help the search engines in understanding the relevancy of the page.  Let’s discuss the each tag one by one

Title tags
Title tags are one of the most important tags in search engine optimization. Title tags appear on the top of the browser when someone search for the keywords in search engines. Use your major keywords in the title tags, length of the title tags should not exceed more than 60-70 characters. A well written page title gets more clicks as compared to poor one.

Meta Description
Meta descriptions tags tell about the description of the page, Meta description give the information to the search engine about the page of site. It’s very important that your description tags have been well written. A description tag appears in the search engine just below the title tags of the page. Use your main keywords in description tags, but remember it should be written like description. Don’t write the description tags with full of keywords. Also description tags should not be longer than 140-160 characters.

Meta Keywords
Keywords tags are the least important tags and for Google they are no longer of any use. But still for other search engines they are little bit of the use. Keywords tags tell the search engines about the all probable keywords they can find on that web page. Don’t put all the keywords in Meta keywords tags. Try to limit the keywords in the Meta keywords tags.

Header Tags (H1, H2 etc.)
Header tags are basically designed to turn the text into headlines of the page. Header tags start from H1 to H6. H1 tags are the most important tags in search engine optimization. Use your major’s keywords in H1 tags.

Alt Tags
Alt tags are the alternative text that browser displays when a web surfer is unable to see the image in web page. Alt tags do the image optimization of site because search engine robots understand the only alt tags not the images. So all of the images of a site should have a proper alt tags. Don’t use more than two keywords in your alt tags and avoid the repetition of keywords in alt tags.
